Biography

Birth: 1910 in Chester, Pennsylvania

Death: 1991 in Pacific Palisades, California

Notes:

  • Educated at Julliard, also studied under Aaron Copland.
  • He wrote a score to 2001: A Space Odyssey, but director Stanley Kubrick pulled his music in favor of existing classical works.
  • He did not win any Academy Awards for his scores, but in 1986 the Academy gave him the Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • He did win a Golden Globe, however.
